Wood, Rattan and Fabric: Materials That Soften Light
Wood, rattan and fabric share one property: none of them bounces light back, they all absorb or filter it. A wood or fabric fixture therefore gives a more enveloping, less contrasted light than metal or clear glass, with softer shadows on the walls. It is the most forgiving family when you do not yet know how a room will be furnished.
Each behaves differently. Solid wood and veneer stay opaque: they push the beam downward, which suits a spot over a table. Stretched fabric diffuses through the shade and lights the walls as well. Rattan and woven fibers let light through between the strands and cast patterns onto the ceiling.
On care, these materials want a dry spot and regular dusting; keep them out of bathrooms and away from a cooktop. Continue with our Scandinavian and natural materials selections.
