Scandinavian Lighting: Soft Light From the North
Scandinavian lighting comes from a real constraint: in countries where winter is long and daylight short, artificial light carries the room, and it has to be comfortable rather than powerful. Hence the opal shades that diffuse without glare, the dome and cone shapes, and the near-total absence of a visible bulb.
Materials follow the same logic: pale wood — oak, ash, birch — off-white, unbleached textile, with black or brass on the structure. The result stays warm without turning rustic, which is why this style ages better than most.
