Vintage and Retro Lighting: Borrowing From Past Decades
Vintage lighting replays specific codes rather than vague nostalgia. The fifties and sixties bring colored opaline, slim rods and saucer shapes; the seventies bring gold brass, smoked glass and heavier volumes; the early twentieth century brings workshop cages and enameled shades. Knowing which decade you are starting from makes the choice far easier.
The bulb matters as much as the fixture. On a clear-glass or exposed-socket model, a visible filament bulb completes the effect; an opaque LED in the same place cancels the whole thing out. Check the socket before ordering — usually E27, E14 on smaller pieces.
Vintage does not take accumulation well: one or two strong fixtures per room is plenty, and the rest can stay neutral. See our brass & gold and industrial selections.
