Ceramic & Stoneware

Ceramic and Stoneware Lighting: Material You Look At Unlit

Ceramic and stoneware are opaque: they do not act on the light, they make the object. A ceramic fixture is therefore chosen as much for what it is switched off as for what it lights — a texture, a glaze, a grain you notice up close. That goes double for lamp bases, where the material sits at hand height.

Firing introduces variation: on reactive glazes and stoneware, tone and grain differ slightly from piece to piece. That is the nature of the material rather than a flaw, but it is worth knowing before you order two identical pieces to flank a bed.

Like stone, ceramic is heavy and vulnerable to knocks: a wide base steadies it, but keep it off furniture edges and out of tight walkways. See our table lamps and natural materials.
