Glass and Crystal Lighting: Light That Passes Through
Glass is the only material that lets light through instead of bouncing it back, and that decides everything. A clear glass fixture does not diffuse: it shows the bulb and throws a fairly direct light. Opal glass does the opposite, softening and hiding the source. Smoked and amber glass sit between the two, tinting slightly as they go.
So the choice starts there, before shape. Clear over a dining table, where you want to see the plates and the object itself; opal in a bedroom or hallway, where a visible bulb in your line of sight gets old fast. On clear models, plan for a decorative bulb: it is part of the design.
