A living room does not need a ceiling light. It needs at least three points of light, placed at different heights: a floor lamp, one or two wall lights, one or two table lamps. Allow a total of 100 to 150 lumens per m², in warm light. Done well, a living room without a ceiling light is more pleasant than one that has nothing but a ceiling light.
Why does a living room do very well without a ceiling light?
A ceiling light illuminates from the centre, downwards, uniformly. That is useful in a kitchen; in a living room, it flattens everything: faces, textures, volumes. The living rooms we find beautiful in magazines are almost always lit by low, spread-out sources that create bright zones and darker zones. The absence of a ceiling light, whether due to a low ceiling or no electrical outlet, is therefore a good opportunity to do better.
How many points of light to plan?
The rule of three heights:
| Height | Light | Role |
|---|---|---|
| High (1.50 to 1.80 m) | Floor lamp, wall light | Ambient light, lights the walls and ceiling |
| Medium (0.60 to 1.20 m) | Table lamp on a console, sideboard or side table | Reading light, landmarks in the room |
| Low (floor to 0.50 m) | Small floor-standing lamp, LED behind a piece of furniture | Depth, “cosy” effect |
For a 20 m² living room, allow three to five lights and 2,000 to 3,000 lumens in total. Five sources of 500 lumens are better than a single one of 2,500.
Solution 1: the floor lamp, next to the seating
This is the natural replacement for the ceiling light. Place it next to the sofa or an armchair, never in the middle of the room, slightly behind the armrest. A model with a wide shade lights downwards (for reading) and upwards (for ambience). The Teliomio floor lamp, with its crumpled paper stem and 75 cm shade, is enough to fill a corner of a room; the Wabiko floor lamp, lower and in pleated fabric, suits ceilings below 2.40 m.

Solution 2: wall lights, to light the walls
A wall light replaces the ceiling light without touching the ceiling: it is fixed to the wall, between 1.60 and 1.80 m from the floor, and sends light up and down. Two symmetrical wall lights on either side of a sofa or a fireplace structure the room immediately. Backlit models, such as the Sylvasca travertine wall light, draw a halo on the wall without glare; openwork models, such as the Rotina rattan wall light, cast shadow patterns. To measure and adapt the height to each room, see our article How high should you mount a wall light?
No cable in the wall? There are plug-in wall lights, with a visible fabric-covered cable, or rechargeable models. For a clean installation, an electrician can run a cable in flat trunking in under an hour.

Solution 3: table lamps, in numbers
This is the most flexible layer, and our table lamps offer the widest choice. A lamp on the console behind the sofa, one on the sideboard, one on the side table: each creates an island of warm light, and together they give the depth that ceiling-lit rooms lack. Vary the materials rather than the styles: a marble and smoked glass lamp such as Marbelo next to a travertine-effect lamp such as Kalita echo each other without copying.
Plug them into the same switched socket, or into smart plugs: switching on three lamps one by one every evening gets tiresome.

Solution 4: a pendant without a ceiling outlet
If you really want a pendant above the coffee table or the dining area, two options. The plug-in pendant, with a cable that runs along the ceiling to the nearest socket, via one or two hooks. Or the arc floor lamp, which comes in from the side and places its shade above the seating without drilling anything.
Solution 5: indirect light, for low ceilings
Below 2.30 m, anything that hangs gets in the way. Work with indirect light: an LED strip placed on top of a bookcase or behind the back of a sofa lights the ceiling and makes the room feel bigger. Combine it with low lamps so you do not end up with a bright ceiling and a dark floor.
Common mistakes
- A single floor lamp for the whole room. It replaces the ceiling lamp with a corner lamp: half the living room stays dark. You need at least three sources.
- All the lamps at the same height. Three table lamps at 1 m from the floor make a line. Mix the heights.
- Bare bulbs. Without a ceiling light, the sources are at eye level: they must be diffused (opal, fabric, frosted glass).
- Different whites. Stay at 2,700 K everywhere; see our guide Which colour temperature to choose, room by room.
Frequently asked questions
How many lumens for a 25 m² living room without a ceiling light?
2,500 to 3,750 lumens in total, spread over at least three lights. For example a 1,200-lumen floor lamp, two 500-lumen wall lights and two 400-lumen table lamps.
Where to place a floor lamp in a living room?
Next to the main seating, set back 20 to 30 cm from the armrest, preferably in a corner. Never in front of a window or in the middle of a walkway.
Can a wall light be installed without drilling?
Yes, with a rechargeable or plug-in model, fixed on an adhesive anchor rated for 2 to 3 kg. For a heavier or stone wall light, drill.
How to light a living room with a very low ceiling?
Nothing that hangs: wall lights, table lamps and indirect light towards the ceiling. A floor lamp under 1.50 m remains possible.
